It’s puzzling to me when people associate networking only when it comes to job searching. Like “I guess I have to start networking now.” They make it sound like hard labor, or even worse, like dating. Of course, it’s critical to the job search process, but networking should be a year-round event—with year-round benefits.
Why network?
There are a few key reasons to network:
- Connect: people are looking for freelance contractors or want to learn about a specific topic or have a unique interest—and you may know the perfect person for them! Connecting people within your network strengthens your relationships.
- Learn: this is a great way to learn more about an industry, a specific company or just to other people in your field. It’s great to get other perspectives and gain knowledge.
- Build: you build strong relationships, which increases the chances of getting introductions to people you want to meet and referrals when you are looking for a new opportunity.
Where to start
Here are a few easy ways to get started:
- Invite colleagues who you don’t work with closely—including other departments. This is a great way to learn what they’re working on and more about your company.
- Make a list of former colleagues—send an email to see how they’re doing and propose a lunch, coffee or happy hour.
- Check out networking events—focused on profession, industry or interest. Get a friend or colleague to go too!
I hope you find networking as interesting and fun as I do. Happy networking!
