The perfect time to get a new job

Motivational quote 'You are the creator of your own destiny' on a notepad

Do you know when the best time to get a new job is? The answer is now.

We’ve worked with hundreds of clients. When we first talk to them, we always ask them why now? And here are the most common answers:

1. They want to feel fulfilled

They may have a good career, but aren’t in a role they love, a team they feel connected to, a company they respect or all of the above. They’re unhappy and often times feel unappreciated.

On average, we spend 33% of our life at work. While we think we can compartmentalize work from our personal lives, it’s truly impossible. Let’s think about it as a report card. If you’re below an 8 out of 10 on happiness scale of work, you’re getting a C at best. Even more concerning is the effect unhappiness has on our moods, our relationships and our psyche.

2. They want to control their destiny.

Most people have organic careers. They get approached by a friend, colleague or recruiter to apply for a role. This is flattering and often times translates into a promotion (higher level and/or salary). They evaluate the opportunity with biases—because they’re excited about the role. But they don’t have an objective benchmark.

When we work with clients, we help them define their target company list and more importantly, the criteria that’s most important to them. Once these are established, they can focus their efforts on getting exactly what they want. And when new opportunities arise in their journey, we map back to the criteria to ensure it aligns with their intention. When people take control, they are more successful and proud of what the career they’ve built.

3. They want to earn more.

When we drill down, it usually comes back to being fulfilled. But it can also mean they just want to be paid what they deserve based on the level, scope of responsibilities and results. Sometimes, they start at a low salary, which makes it challenging to catch up to market rate. Salary increases are nominal—on average 3% a year—unless you get a promotion. Even with the latter, it may not be a substantial bump, especially if at a company that doesn’t value its employees.

One of the biggest reasons we hear people not wanting to leave a job is that they have a lot of flexibility, which is important for their family. Because we focus on good companies—meaning good culture, core values and people—flexibility is a staple. Of course, there is a higher commitment in the first three months or so, but once you’ve established trust, it becomes more about results and not hours spent in the office. It’s really a non-issue.

We work with high performing professionals to find and land jobs they love—where they receive the recognition they deserve and feel fulfilled. Our proven program helps them find a dream job in the fastest time possible.
