Over a year ago, Malcolm joined our program to find a job where he could grow his career. He built a robust career in and around Microsoft — leading the development of products and programs that helped businesses scale growth. At that point he had been a consultant for a few years and was looking to return to a full-time gig. Malcolm was looking for a role that would leverage his wealth of experience and skills, especially mentoring junior program managers.

He was able to achieve his goals in just two months of working with us! I asked Malcolm to share his job search journey and how he leveraged some of the best best practices to land a job he loves.

Q&A with Malcolm

Q: Before joining our program, what did you find the most challenging about the job search?
A: I focused most of my efforts applying online and wasn’t getting any traction. I knew I should be networking, but wasn’t sure who to reach out to. I felt frustrated and defeated — looking back I see that it was because I didn’t have a goal that was aligned to my strengths and interests.

Q: What was it like working with us?
A: Unconventional in the sense that they started with defining what was most important to me in a role and company, instead of focusing on current job openings. They partnered with me throughout the entire journey — filled with great coaching and unwavering support.

Q: What did you find most valuable?
A: I appreciated the structure of the program, which helped me focus my efforts on the most effective activities. Being goal-oriented, it was great to get through each stage of the job search by following practical steps.

Q: How did you land your dream job?
A: The most helpful thing was learning the mechanics of networking and navigating an informational, which helped me get the referrals and introductions I wanted. The interview format and practice also helped me secure a fantastic offer!

Q: How do you feel about the results?
A: Great! I was pleasantly surprised how quickly things moved once I started the program. The job is aligned to my goals and helped me transition out of a consulting role. I get to work with fantastic people, I am valued for the impact I’m making and I have work-life balance.

Q: What advice do you have for other job seekers?
A: Try to establish a focus, a place that you would like to get to — and then do what it takes to accomplish it, one little task at a time. Those little tasks add up (quicker than you would imagine) — it is “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts” thing!
