Kenneth had a progressive career at Concur (and SAP Concur), moving from Marketing Analyst to Senior Analyst to Team Lead and finally to Senior Group Manager. He valued his experience there, but missed the high growth stage where he built programs, processes and teams to support the business unit’s double-digit revenue and customer growth.
He was ready for a new challenge that would leverage his expertise and experience where he could make a big impact. Kenneth also wanted to make a strategic move that upleveled his career trajectory — so he joined our program.
Q&A with Kenneth
Why did you join the Uplevel Job Search program?
It had been over 7 years since I had seriously looked for a new role and I recognized that a lot had changed in the hiring world. Frankly, I was overwhelmed by even the thought of reentering the job search process. I also wasn’t looking for any job. I was already in a good, comfortable role — but I knew I wanted a rare dream role.
I was at an important inflection point in my career. After speaking with the Dream Job Catcher team I understood they had their finger on the pulse of the tech industry and had helped many others who were similar to me. I recognized it was an investment in myself and would guide me to a greater career path that I desired.
What was it like working with Dream Job Catcher?
It was a wonderful experience and exactly what I needed for where I was in my career. I had a playbook and a coach throughout the entire process that challenged and supported me. The team was thoughtful and the training was relevant. I received both positive and constructive feedback that I needed to help present the best version of myself to the professional world.
What did you find the most valuable?
That I had a partner with my coach and the team who helped me feel more than prepared for each key step in the process.
How did you feel throughout the process?
My job hunting anxieties decreased shortly after signing up for the program. As a planner, I was comforted by the training that was available to me. From the intentional career setting goals all the way through to negotiating my offer, Julie and team helped me feel confident in each step along the way.
How did you land your new job?
Thanks to a valuable makeover of my LinkedIn profile and leveraging the power of 2nd connections, the hiring manager reached out to me for an intro chat. After learning more about the position and the company I really wanted to join! Julie and the Dream Job Catcher program helped me nail my subsequent interview loops and final presentation.
Did it align to your goals?
Yes! I found a great role at one of the most exciting and high growth startups. The culture is positive and collaborative. There’s also good work-life balance and many growth opportunities. I was also able to increase my compensation by 50%, which is especially meaningful as I grow my family.
I have a supportive manager and work with smart people. My work is impactful and I’m valued for my contributions.
What surprised you by the results?
How quickly I was able to land such an awesome role. From the time I joined to the time I received the verbal offer was 2.5 months. Even though parts of it seemed to move slowly, my overall journey was fast.
What advice do you have for other job seekers?
Put in the time early to reflect on what you truly want for the rest of your professional career. Dedicate the time to research target companies and step outside of your comfort zone to network and connect with interesting people (which is now part of my professional practice).
What are you loving about your role?
I am working on challenging, impactful projects while surrounded by talented, selfless colleagues. There’s also a shared excitement to be at an organization that is pioneering a brand new category.
