Unfulfilled and Unhappy at Work? Here’s How to Get a Job You Love

On average, we spend 33% of our life at work. Can you imagine if most of that time you were unhappy or unfulfilled? And imagine how it affects you physically, mentally and emotionally.

Let’s imagine an ideal situation:

  • Every morning, you’re excited about what you’re going to do that day.
  • You feel proud of the company you work for because you believe in its values and vision.
  • You love the people you work with because they’re smart, positive and hardworking.
  • You feel appreciated and fulfilled — and continuously learn and grow.

What if you loved your job, were recognized for your great work and got the salary you deserve?

Here is a step-by-step process that can help you get your dream job.

Step 1: Build a target company list

Rather than look at job boards for opportunities based on role — determine what type of companies you would thrive at. Look at the size, industry, types of products/services, etc. What kind of culture and core values matter to you?

Step 2: Revamp your resume and LinkedIn profile

Building a strong professional brand is critical to make a lasting impression. Create a compelling resume and LinkedIn profile that reflects who you are, what you excel at, what you’ve accomplished and what makes you unique.

Step 3: Network strategically

Networking is instrumental to the job search. The more targeted you are, the faster you’ll learn about opportunities and get the referrals you want. You also need to craft and tell your story and elevator pitch effectively.

Step 4: Secure interviews

Go beyond traditional channels and try creative methods (e.g., pain letters) to get noticed — and show your passion for the role and company. You should leverage your storytelling skills and network to secure interviews.

Step 5: Ace the interview

A stellar screen will expedite the interview process and give you key insights. You need to prep so you’re ready to handle any question or curve ball and position yourself as the best candidate.

Step 6: Evaluating and negotiating your offer

It’s an amazing feat and feeling to get an offer. However, you need to seriously evaluate it to determine if it’s your dream job. And if it is, then it’s time to flex your negotiation skills while demonstrating your enthusiasm and professionalism.
