Can I Do This Job?

One of the most common questions I get from my clients is: Can I get this role? They show me a description of a role they really want. They go line by line and tell me if they’ve done that exact thing or not. They then tally up checks and see how close they are to 100%. And when it’s not close to a perfect score, they tell me why they aren’t likely to get it.

When they give themselves a goose egg, I ask clarifying questions. What have they done that’s similar or parallel to what they’re asking for? Most often there is something they’ve done something relevant and deserve a checkmark.

We also look at transferable skills, strengths and the past successes to see if a) they can add value to the role and b) if there is a pattern of success. If the answer to both is yes, then we factor those in as well.

We work together to assess if the role is a worthwhile pursuit. We look for roles that are a stretch—not an enormous leap—but one that feels a bit uncomfortable. When looking for a new opportunity it should be one where you grow and that means pushing yourself. Your career path should have an upward trajectory—not always in title, but the scope or depth should be bigger.

The best advice I can share is to be open-minded when reading job descriptions and to push yourself to set higher goals.
