I used to cringe when someone asked what my dream job is. It felt like a loaded question. What would that look and feel like? Would it be something altruistic? Something that made tons of money? Would it be working for myself or at a company and if the latter, big or small?
Over the years I’ve been able to define it as this: a job that I love going to every day. I equate a dream job to true love. Instead of one, a person can have several true loves in a lifetime. Timing plays a key role and it’s more about finding someone who aligns with your interests, goals and beliefs at a specific point of time.
Similarly, people should have multiple dream jobs in a career. Here’s what that should look like:
- You’re excited about the projects you’re working on.
- You feel proud of the company you work for because you believe in its values and vision.
- You love the people you work with because they’re smart, positive and hardworking.
- You feel appreciated and fulfilled continuously learning and growing.
A dream job is where you’re able to set the bar higher and higher—realizing your full potential. AND it also means you are receiving the recognition and compensation that you deserve.
Fortunately, I’ve had several dream jobs—5 to be exact. And equally important I’ve had a few nightmare jobs—so I know the difference. There’s nothing like hands-on experience to clearly identify one from the other 🙂
I am passionate about helping people find their dream jobs. When working with clients, I dig deep to figure out what they love doing, what roles they should focus on and what types of companies they’d thrive at. This requires introspection that leads to insights that help guide the definition and direction of their next career.
Are you at a dream job? If not, are you feeling unfulfilled and unhappy? If so, it may be time to move on. Take a look at our video to see how we help people find and land dream jobs in record time. Watch now.
