Dream Job Blog

Our insights, advice and best practices on job search strategies, professional development and growth mindset.

One of the most common questions we get is how long will it take to land a dream job. It’s a difficult one to answer because our clients typically fall into one of two paths when it comes to their job search journey: the relatively linear one and the one filled with twists and turns. I recently took stock of our clients from the first group and noticed commonalities that contributed to their speedy success.

One of my childhood heros was Laura Ingalls Wilder. She’s the author of the series “Little House on the Prairie.” I read all her books and watched all the TV shows — multiple times. I was in awe of the adventures and tragedies of a young girl growing up in the Wild West. She inspired me to write — starting my first journal when I was six.

After reviewing thousands and writing hundreds of resumes, I’ve come to this profound conclusion: it’s freakin hard to create a good resume. Last month I hosted a webinar. I created the slides, wrote a script, practiced and felt pretty good about it. And then something strange happened. I got a sore throat the day before—and not just a “oh it’s a little raw” feeling, but a “it kills to swallow saliva” feeling.

Constraint: n. limitation or restriction This may sound strange, but I love constraints. Well, let me reframe, I love knowing what the constraints are so I can create solutions and plans to overcome them—effectively and swiftly. As a child, I loved puzzles (jigsaw and logic) and games—so it’s no wonder that I embrace constraints. Because […]

Recently I read “168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think,” by Laura Vanderkam. I confess, I wasn’t very excited to read it. My business coach gave it to me as an assignment AND asked me to track my activities for two weeks.

Have you ever started to drink or eat something and then realized it was past the expiration date? Even if it tasted okay, you immediately feel a bit queasy and wondered if you’re going to get sick.

How much do you love WebMD? I love it—a lot. You know who doesn’t? My doctor (and probably most of the medical community).
